Resident Spotlight: Joan Shultz.

Joan is 100 years old. What’s Her Secret to Living to Be A Centenarian?

We’ve become accustomed to reading a steady stream of news about living longer – including tips for diet, exercise, mental well-being and personal habits. It keeps our hopes alive for aging’s cure. In the 20th century, for example, advances in medicine and health practices doubled the human lifespan. Charlton Place is fortunate to have a centenarian among the midst of interesting residents who call our senior living community home. Meet Joan Shultz.

Joan’s Favorite Parts of The Charlton Place Lifestyle.

Joan is happy at Charlton Place and feels comfortable with her life here. “It’s a nice place and the people are congenial,” she said. “The rehabilitation department is excellent. All of the therapists are good. That is my favorite part about the community.”

Joan has been in our community for about 9 years. Most of them were spent at The Gables Assisted Living. She just moved over to Charlton Place about a year ago.

Three Levels of Senior Care in Deatsville, Alabama.

Our campus offers three levels of care: assisted living, short-term rehabilitation and long-term health care. The Gables at Charlton Place Assisted Living and Charlton Place Rehabilitation & Health Care offer personalized care plans based on individual needs and health goals. That’s part of what drew Joan to our community initially. She said, “I liked that the medical care was available here and that I did not have to go anywhere else. I made the decision to stay at Charlton Place permanently during a rehab stay for a broken leg. I needed more medical care and I knew it was time.”

Joan was born in Great Britain in Wales and moved to the United States when she was three years old. She grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in Business Administration. Her husband was a minister and they traveled around the U.S. with his work. They lived in Kansas, Southern Illinois, St. Louis, Alabama, Texas and Missouri and then finally moved to Florida to be near her brother. After her husband passed away, she decided to move to Prattville, Alabama to be near her two sons.

Indulging in Favorite Hobbies Is Easy.

Her hobbies include painting and reading. She has plenty of time and opportunity for both thanks to our maintenance-free lifestyle. “I now love to read. I recently read a book about Michelle Obama,” she said.

We asked Joan, “If you wanted the world to know one thing about you, what would it be? What are you most proud of?”

She replied, I lived 100 years by learning to stay in the present moment with life. That is the secret.”

Now that secret is out and there is no better place to “live in the present” in retirement than Charlton Place. Inspiring activities, socializing events, delicious dining and creative programming can fill your days with pleasure while our responsive team of professionals care for your every need. Residents here look forward to what each new day will bring.

One last question, Joan. “How would your friends describe you?”

Her answer: “Full of love. I am 100 years old with 100 years of love I gave. I gave all my love to my husband, family and friends. I am 100 years of love.”

That love has made Joan an important part of our Charlton Place family. Don’t you deserve to find out more about us?
